Paying property expenses
How do I pay real estate property expenses which cannot be paid using the 401k name, like utilities? Can I pay the expenses from my personal account and then write myself a check to reimburse myself?
No, you cannot pay 401k expenses with your personal funds, nor can you reimburse yourself from the 401k.
- All expenses related to 401k investments owned must be paid by the 401k
- You are a disqualified person with respect to the investments of the 401k
For property expenses
- Most utility companies will allow you to open the account in the name of the 401k
- The bills can then be paid with your 401k checking account, using a check, debit card, or online banking
- If you are unable to open the account in the name of the 401k, you can open the account in your name, as trustee of the 401k. Payment still must come from the 401k account using a check, debit card, or online banking from the 401k account
